Sophie and the Quiet Helper
Sophie still loved her patterns and her quiet moments under the oak tree. She was good at noticing small things—like when someone’s hands started to shake a little, or when their voice got quieter than usual.
One sunny afternoon at recess, her friend Mia was sitting on the bench instead of playing. Mia’s shoulders were hunched, and she was taking quick, shallow breaths. Sophie walked over slowly.
“Hi, Mia,” Sophie said in a soft voice. “You look worried. Is everything okay?”
Mia whispered, “I have to read my poem in front of the class tomorrow. My tummy feels like it’s full of buzzing bees. I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Sophie remembered how loud noises and big changes sometimes made her feel overwhelmed. She knew that when someone felt anxious, the most helpful thing was to stay calm herself. If she got loud or rushed, it might make the buzzing bees worse.
So Sophie sat down beside Mia, leaving a little space between them. She spoke slowly and gently.
“It’s okay to feel scared,” Sophie said. “I’m right here with you. We don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. We can just sit together and watch the clouds.”
Mia nodded. Sophie kept her own breathing steady—in through her nose for four counts, out through her mouth for four counts—the same way her teacher had taught her. She didn’t try to fix everything at once. She didn’t say “Just don’t be nervous!” or jump up and make a big plan. She simply stayed quiet and calm.
After a few minutes, Mia’s breathing slowed down too. “Thanks for not making a fuss,” Mia said. “It helps when someone is peaceful next to me.”
Sophie smiled. “Would you like to practice reading your poem just to me? Only if you want. We can stop whenever you say.”
Mia nodded again. Softly, she read the first two lines. Sophie listened carefully and said, “That sounded lovely. We can practice more later if you’d like.”
By the end of recess, Mia felt a little braver. The next day, when it was time to read in class, she glanced at Sophie, who gave her a calm thumbs-up from across the room. Mia’s voice still wobbled a bit, but she finished the whole poem.
Afterward, Mia ran up to Sophie. “You helped me by staying so calm. It made the buzzing bees quieter.”
Sophie felt warm inside. She had learned that when someone around her was feeling anxious, the best gift she could give was her own steady presence—soft words, quiet company, and no pressure. Friendship didn’t always mean fixing things. Sometimes it just meant being a calm, kind place for someone else to rest.
And under the oak tree that afternoon, the two friends made a new pattern together: sitting side by side, breathing slowly, and watching the clouds drift by.
